My daughter was given a kids yoga dvd by my sister & bil... this she absolutely adores, and will go through the entire routine sometimes several times a day. She's asked me several times what "namaste" means... and I've looked it up, but I'm having trouble trying to put it into words that she understands - has anyone got any ideas on this?

it is a greeting that is meant to bring forth feelings of respect, acceptance, openness and love. welcome is probably the best definition for your daughter.

The kids at our school all do yoga and DP and I attend a class with the same teacher once a week. So we have lots of fun comparing what we do in our classes. Yesterday, DD said 'do you say Namaste at the end?'. When I asked what she thought it meant, she said it meant you were giving the other person your love. I thought that was lovely and very simple and easy to understand for young children. Have you tried explaining it? How did you go??

Of all the translations or explanations I've heard, I like "All that is best and highest in me greets/salutes all that is best and highest in you." It's almost a toast saying, "here's to you!" or a salutation you may use to sign off a letter with, "All my best to you". Personally, I've always perceived it as "I'm humbly grateful for you" A 3 year old might get that. |
