Roll Eyes Keys to greatness for teens (works for any age though)

by Jim Rohn
1) Setting Goals. I call it the view of the future. Most people, including kids, will pay the price if they can see the promise of the future. So we need to help our kids see a well-defined future, so they will be motivated to pay the price today to attain the rewards of tomorrow. Goals help them do this.

2) Personal Development. Simply making consistent investments in our self-education and knowledge banks pays major dividends throughout our lives. I suggest having a minimum amount of time set aside for reading books, listening to audiocassettes, attending seminars, keeping a journal and spending time with other successful people. Charlie Tremendous Jones says you will be in five years the sum total of the books you read and the people you are around.

3) Financial Planning. I call it the 70/30 plan. After receiving your paycheque or paying yourself, simply setting aside 10% for saving, 10% for investing and 10% for giving, and over time this will guarantee financial independence for a teenager.

Sounds great for a teenager who is motivated and are able/willing to help define those goals. My teen is so unmotivated to do almost anything! Im at a complete loss as to what will get her to see past even 1 hour at a time....
Seriously this girl cant see "future" let alone spend time in the now actually planning what she might like to bring about for herself in that future.

Do you reckon she would journal? Even just writing down three things she is grateful for at the end of each day can help. Apart from that, hugs to you...so difficult to see someone you love not feeling the desire to take an active role in their own life.

Thanks for this Meg. I've just printed it off for DD. While she is almost 18, I think this would be a great guide for her to recapture some of the motivation she seems to have lost since finishing year 12. Friendships seem to have distanced a bit as they have all gone their own way & I think she is feeling a little lost. She works 2 jobs & is starting uni next year but I haven't seen her pick up a book for months. Her motivation to save for a car has diminished too. I'm getting a bit worried. Will talk with her when she gets home from work.

xxx Amanda
