Finally a sensible 'diet' in the media!
Hooray!!! For the Biggest Loser and Dr Norman Swan.

DP LOVES this show and was watching it last night. I was intrigued when a section on 'what to eat' came on. 'Oh, here we go...' I thought, but No! They recommended the following:
-very little red meat
-fish a few times a week
-pulses in abundance
-vegetables, particularly leafy greens
-good fats (mono unsaturated vegetable oils)
-not very sweet deserts
-not very much refined food, especially grains and sugar
-not much fruit
basically a nutrient dense, calorie poor diet.
Another interesting point made was that people who take high antioxidant supplements die younger than people who don't. They recommended getting antioxidants from food, rather than supplements. Apparently Australia has the highest per capita consumption of supplements in the world!
Anyway, I was absolutely stoked as this is pertty much how I (try to) feed the kids and how DP and I eat. I was particularly happy to hear someone with authority recommending 'not much fruit'.

Re: Finally a sensible 'diet' in the media!
Finally, something to show DP. He is an apple a day (plus a couple of bananas and oranges) kind of guy and I worry about how much sugar and other things are going into his body but he seems to think that all fruit, no matter how much of it you have, is good for you. He always complains of always being hungry but I have a feeling that it is because he needs to get different nutrients rather than more of the same ones.
DP has a hatred of all things to do with seafood so I don't think I could get him to have fish at all let alone a few times a week. What are some alternatives for fish?
The only time we have red meat is during winter when it gets colder. I don't feel there is much of a need to eat during the summer. Yay for leafy greens. They are my favourite type of vegetable.I

Yep - I was happy to rub the "less fruit" thing in DH's face, too
He's always saying how DD should eat more fruit (she already has plenty of it), which I've been trying to tell him is not ideal for someone who's already overweight.
Great to see them doing some master classes to really help contestants (& viewers) with helpful hints for life-long health & fitness. Sounds like the producers have actually listened to critics
