Default Re: Bratz dolls

Great discussion. I swore (I even swore on this very forum!) that there was no way my DD was getting a Bratz doll. She wasn't interested in them till she started school and then they became her heart's desire, finally we got her one for her 6th birthday. (There were some horrendous ones that looked like prostitutes but there were also some that had really funky outfits, the Tokyo-a-go-go ones are cool! )Anyway, since then she has saved up and bought another one, and also I got her a Bratz Boy because I quite like them. She also has Barbies and Kellies and even has the pregnant one someone mentioned, she has had so much pleasure out of these toys, she plays all kinds of imagination games with them on a daily basis so I am pretty chilled out about it. And I quite like dressing them up too. I don't think it's a big deal anymore, though when Lily was little I was adament my daughter would not have a Barbie, then I remembered how much I loved playing with my Daisy Doll when I was a child.

Shock Bratz dolls effect children's play!!!

I have a major problem with Bratz dolls and it frightens me how parents unthinkingly buy them.
I did a bit of an experiment with the dolls and 4 eight year olds last year for assignment. I gave 2 of the girls a Barbie, the other 2 a Bratz, and asked each group seperately to write me a story of what their doll did that day.
The Barbie group came up with a story of going to the zoo and the beach.
The Bratz group had a story of the doll going to the hairdresser, going shopping and then she met up with her boyfriend...
See the problem? Obviously I had a VERY small study group, but i'm sure if expanded upon the result would be the same.
I don't agree with Barbies body shape as much as anyone, but at least with her 'nice' girl image she doesn't lead children to role play more adult scenarios. It also might intersest some of you to know that as part of the study I also asked the girls questions on different issues. They informed me that the point of a boyfriend was to look pretty for them and to have sex... My sister was part of this study group. I sincerely hope I talk some sense into her before her teens.
