I wish I'd read "100 Ways to Calm the Crying" by Pinky McKay before my first baby was born. I find hearing my baby cry, and not knowing what to do about it, is the hardest part of being a mother. Pinky's book has lots of info on why babies cry and how to soothe them.

Parenting For a Peaceful World by Robin Grille is a must-read IMO. Not a parenting instruction book per se, but looks at the parenting styles of past generations and gets you to consider your own upbringing, as well as how you'd like to parent your own child. The first part can be a little hard for some people, but it does get easier as you go through.

and is FREE if you subscribe to ABA!!!

Australian Breastfeeding Association

Other books I'd recommend are

Breastfeeding Made Simple

and

Helping Your Baby to Sleep - Why Gentle Techniques Work Best

These two are brilliant! And your local group of ABA may even have them in their library so you don't have to purchase them

"Baby on Board"- Howard Chilton. A really good general read.
For Pregnancy- I can't go past "Active Birth" and "Spiritual Midwifery."

I found that "Birthing from Within" was a fantastic read. Lots of ideas for working through possible emotional hurdles you may have before you give birth.... it is also really different in that it relies heavily on creating birth art... which is a great outlet.

Also "Parenting by Heart" was nice and gentle - I think is by Pinky Mckay aswell.

Good luck TTC!
