Default Speech at 2

Alright I want your opinons. My DD is two in a month and I know she's a little behind the average with her speech and I'm not worried about it but I wonder how far behind.
If I try and put down all her words/pronunciation tell me what you think.

Mummy/mum/mama = Me
Daddy = Dh
aah ooh = her sister
wa wa = love you
dee = drink
gyungyee = hungry
baby = baby, pencils, rabbit, and other varied things
poon= spoon
for = fork
shoe = shoe
be = ben
nannah = hannah
mama = grandma
de = derek
noo = nose
che = cheek
toe = toe
ca = car
ney = horse
doh = dog
wowa = flower
teeta = texta
mine = mine ....what two year old can't say that

That is pretty much all of the ones I can figure out, there are lots of other sounds that are slowly becoming more distinguishable but I mostly don't know what she wants until I question and point and of course she says yeah and noo for yes and no.

Her comprehension is great but I can tell she is getting frustrated at me not understanding her all the time.
6 months ago the health nurse told me that if it didn't improve enough by two she would reccomend a therapist, but I have sworn off health nurses for the time being.

Do you think I need to get her assessed or is this within the realm of acceptable for a two year old?

Em

Hi Dorasmum,
I can't remember exactly but your daughter seems to be on a par with where my DD2 was just before she turned 2. DD2 is now nearly 2 and 1/2 and she talks non-stop to try and keep up with her sister.
If you aren't happy with your MCHN, can you see a different one if you want her seen? In my experience the MCHNs are more relaxed when it comes to older babys/toddlers.

Mine is doing almost exactly the same thing and she's a month over two (in fact I think she has less words than on your list). I'm not worried about it. I will start to worry if she's doing the same thing at three!

I haven't been to a MCHN....I must admit to feeling rather intimidated by the comments about them! I'd wait, I think.

She sounds absolutely fine to me. DS1 didnt start really saying anything until about 2 weeks before he turned 2 and then it was like switch had been turned on. Hasn't stopped talking since and really has the vocab now of a 5 year old. So don't worry

Sounds normal to me

After an early talker first time round, my 2nd child is 29 months and has only 4 words (Meow, woof, mum and up!).

I've had him assessed with both hearing tests and peadiatrician visit, and they say "don't worry about it until he turns three".

So I'm pretty sure that with all those words, you would be told not to worry!

I didn't see "NO!" on that list makes me wonder what you're doing so well with your little one as I seem to hear that word twenty million times a day from my kids!

Seriously though, it sounds within the realms of normal to me. But if you're worried, go with your own instinct (as opposed to a health nurse opinion or your friends and family). If you have a local GP who is not a stress merchant, try booking in for a general development check-up. GPs might see a big range of normal in toddlers and older children, while health nurses might only see the older kids for a vaccination.

I'm a speechie (seems like a distant life) and it sounds like she is doing just fine. At two it is more about language than speech sounds and it looks like your little one has lots of words and her language is`developing nicely gtg, might reply a bit more later - cranky baby needs me

I have a chart here from a speech pathologist......it is actually quiet reassuring. Shows how high societies expectations are of toddlers speech. I had a MCH nurse tell me she was worried my son had a lisp at age 2. That's how I got the chart and the speechy laughed at the nurse's expectations. Anyway I'll try and attach it.
The file size is too big....PM me and I can email it to you if you are interested

From the information you've provided she's not behind at all

That is a great strategy for trying to figure out what she is trying to say to you. Her langauge vocab is bigger than her ability to say sounds and that's why you can't distinguish what she is saying right now. But she will learn more sounds, and you will become accustomed to her developing speech patterns.

Ok, this is where someone might say "she is getting frustrated, you should get some help". Often, if children are frustrated by their inability to communicate and get what they want, that is a good cause to maybe think about some professional advice. But in contrast, you're DD can express what she wants, she is getting frustrated because you don't understand her words. Give it some time and you will learn them

Continue to swear off the health nurse
