Default Anyone familiar with bayside Brissie burbs/schools?

We are moving from Ipswich to bayside so DD can be closer to family. Our family are mostly in Wynnum/Manly, but we can't really afford anything there (except perhaps something that needs MAJOR renos to be liveable), so the options are either Thorneside or Welly Point. Thorneside is closer to family, but my sense is that folks there are either very well-heeled or down-at-heel, with no middle ground.

Is anyone here familiar with these areas? I want to find the best place to raise DD and send her to state schools that aren't too crappy. I assume that I'll be able to find other natural parents wherever I go, but I do worry about what kind of kids DD will be around in the neighbourhood and at school.

Hope this thread isn't too out of place in this forum!

TIA,

Ozgal

yep...thornside and birkdale are two areas i personally would avoid.

Wellington Point is good, Alexandra hills, and capalaba too. Most of the schools in these areas are good from what i hear. We have a friend who works at most of the schools in these areas in the primary IT department, and he has had mostly good things to say about the schools. However i know that Hilliards state primary in Alexandra hills has a very good reputation.

somethings in this thread might help you....
Suburbs near Murarrie/Brisbane

best of luck!

Thanks Sweetchili! Both your response and the link to your earlier response to another post were really helpful. Yesterday we looked at a house in Thorneside where the tenants were hanging out, they had a 10 month old son who was just crawling around the darkened house while parents sat around watching tv at midday. Not the kind of kids I envisage DD hanging out with (although granted you can find this anywhere).

Interesting scoop about Wondall state school. We're also concerned about the amalgamation and shutting down of state schools that's going to be happening Bayside. I'm wondering if Wellington Point schools might be better if they stay small?

I just hope we're not moving too far from the City where most of the alternative schools tend to be from what I hear. Oxley was another option for us but it's a bit close to the industrial areas of Darra and we're concerned about pollution after being exposed to toxic dump fires here in Ipswich.

Any more opinions? This really helps!
