Question How long did u stay in hospy after your 2nd/3rd etc birth?

Hi all

Well after having my planned homebirth moved back to a birth centre...I am just wondering how long I should stay in hospy...

For my first I was in hospy for 2-3 days...but now I am going to have a 24 month old at home and I dont want her to be too disrupted by the whole 'birth'.

I really wanted the homebirth so now I want my DD to be at the birth centre with us...but I am just confused.

Part of me thinks I want to be back home the same or next day. But then another part thinks I should stay at hospy a little longer so I can recover a little.

How long were you away from home for your 2nd/3rd births and was it enough/not enough?

Thanks!
Mic

7 days with Justin (Niccola was 2.4), and 5 days with both girls after him. I like the time alone with the newborn, gives me a chance to bond.

Second baby - planned for a VBAC with overnight or two day stay as I had a 17mo at home already. Ended up with messy CS and 5 day stay, but I really should have got midcall or stayed an extra couple of days so that the nasty infection in my wound could have been picked up before I went home (instead of weeks later when it was really bad).

Third baby - planned CS with seven day stay as I had a 3yo and 22mo at home already. Went home on day 5 feeling relatively great as I had no infections and had lots of support waiting for me at home.

DS2 was born early hours of the morning, we were home that arvo. It was a short labour and I felt fine to go home. Wanted to be home, in my comfort zone.

And for DS1, he went to bed drinking milk cuddling Mum (in family bed), then he woke the next morning to have his Dad already back saying "you've got a baby brother, come and meet him (luckily MIL was staying at the time so he could just sleep). So he came and met his brother, then we all came home together, and he went to bed that night cuddling him Mum again, with Dad and new baby brother. Yes, we were lucky with the timing, but I do think it was a great part of their bonding and lack of any jealousy from DS1.

DD1 was born at 2am thursday morning and I was home by friday arvo. DD2 was born at 6pm and I was again home by friday arvo. About 12 hours longer but it was only because with DD2 my blood pressure dropped off the scale and I was dizzy. They wanted me to stay longer but I hate being in hospital. Aren't hospitals one of the worst places to pick up strange strains of bacteria? I figure the sooner I can get bub back home the better. I need my own bed too. We live just across the road from the hospital too so it was easy for the midwife to visit, may have been main reason they let me discharge early.

2nd birth was at hospy - son born in the arvo and home by 10am next day. 3rd birth was at hospy - daughter born at lunchtime and we were home by 9am next day, and she was 5 weeks prem. Had had steroid injections numerous times prior to her birth though, and she was born with no probs whatsoever. In hindsight I wish I had of stayed longer with prem daughter, she ended up with pretty bad jaundice and didnt feed well for the first couple of weeks. But I insisted on leaving and only if she came with me, I CANT STAND HOSPITAL! Funnily enough, Im so tired and exhausted at the moment that I would love nothing more than a seven day hospital stay laying in bed resting and having my meals brought to me, even if they arent the tastiest - it would be like a holiday at a resort!

My second baby was born in the afternoon and I recall staying overnight (birth centre) and my mum bring our toddler early in the morning. We would have left after the morning rounds. Third baby we only stayed for as long as was required - maybe 4-6 hours. At the Brisbane birth centre bringing siblings is welcomed if you have a dedicated carer for them. Maybe you could explore this option at your BC? Why didn't you birth at home?

I have a condition where they consider me too high risk...needless to say I dont think thats correct...anyway. We dont have the option financially to hire a private midi and I am chicken to freebirth.

I will speak to them at the BC...I will be fighting tooth and nail to have DD there...but if I have to stay o'night she wont be able to stay

I will have someone to take care of Eve...thinking of getting a doula and between hubby and her there will always be someone there for my DD

Even some hospitals are flexible on siblings staying. My babies are born at a private (Catholic) hospital, and I have seen a mum and newborn who had dad, pre-schooler and a grandmother stay in the room too.

On the other hand, some hospitals can be totally crap about family staying. I know hospitals - public and private - in Canberra that don't even allow fathers to stay.

my hubby didnt get to stay last time at st george public in sydney...you get moved out of the birth centre into the ward with the other mums...lucky I was in a room with only 1 other mum!!!

it was very hard not to have him there in the middle of the night when I needed him >(
