Something personalised - so CD with her name; book with her as one of the characters.

Clothes or Dress-up clothes - so fairy princess dress etc etc Jade at 3yrs is now really becoming aware of what she's wearing, so appreciates clothes that she particularly likes (ie anything pink with sparkles/rhinestones and/or feathers/fluffy bits)

An event rather than a "thing" present - eg. voucher to go to the zoo or whatever she's in to. You can dress up the voucher in a really nice card, with flaps etc to find stuff. Or for several kids, you can make the vouchers as the treasures in a Treasure Hunt (the older kids can be have more complicated instructions to find their treasure). Oh at each stage of the treasure hunt have a little pressie/food type treasure. hmmmmm that's a really good idea, I might use that one here!!

That's all I can think of for now!

something consumable... food stuff she likes... art/craft supplies - a painting kit (get a cheap one of those canvases + some paints... they're great for little ppl to do paintings for ppl on)

we bought a huge bucket of jumbo chalk for $3.50 from lincraft - i'm going to use it as a bday present for a 4 yr old this month.

a paper mache kit you put together yourself (if her mum would be up for doing it with her)

i'll be back

If they're starting pre-school or childcare, useful things like backpacks, hats, lunchboxes etc.

A big, bright coloured tub or box to put all their other toys in, with maybe one small thing inside it.

Stickers and a book to stick them in.

A photo album and voucher for digital printing (assuming mummy or daddy owns a digital camera).
