Question Food: Everything in moderation??

(I havnt posted for a while so I thought Id ask......)

I know this is the catch cry of a lot of people in regards to food for kids and themselves in general. Why it is a nice principle, I just wonder whether all foods should be so. I ask this as at my MG the other day one of my friends was feeding her 20mth old gatoraide (?sp) Now I have never drunk the stuff but isnt it an electrolite replacement? ie lots of salt and suger? Im not the strictest or best when it comes to food, but I dont let my DD have chocolate milk, jam donuts, jaffa's, diet coke and the like at 17mths old, where as this is regular fair in my MG. So what do you all think?

Special occations (birthdays/Christmas etc), I allow casp to eat what ever is around (chocolate/chips etc). We never have this stuff in the house and I would never buy it for him or offer it to him. This is my idea of moderation.
gaterade, jaffas, just at MG? no way!

does she realise that it may be dangerous? some people have no idea and I certainly don't subscribe to the thought "everything in moderation". I watched a family give their little girl who would have been lucky to be 18mths coke the other day. she didn't really like it but they kept prompting her to have some more and kept saying "yum yum" to her. I was shocked as they were eating healthy food etc

I think they mean every food in moderation, this stuff isn't food it is acid isn't it?

Does the fact that you don't give your child these foods, and I would imagine that you tell them why, how do they react to that?
How does your toddler react when others around her have this stuff and she isn't allowed to?

Unless your child can ask for these foods, why bother? People laugh at my little 15mth old trotting around the organic store munching on a raw capsicum that she has picked from my basket, saying 'oh she eats well', it is that she doesn't know any other foods, and I sure wish I didn't!

I think the everything in moderation thing is to get people who don't really think, to at least limit the crap they eat. Plus, if you really mix up your diet so you have a little bit of all the wonderful foods, like several vegetables rather than heaps of just one, that is much healthier. That is what it is meant for, but has stretched to the crap as we just can't help ourselves. What is it about our bodies that has made what is bad for us taste so much better? It is so weird. Almost like that Adam and Eve thing is true.

Linda.

Think I will go have some more chocolate for breakfast now before my little girl wakes up for her natural yoghurt with rice puffs. ;-)

Linda!

My boys are older, so we do work on the everything in moderation - but just don't buy (well, not much anyway ) junk. That way, if they're at a friend or a party, I don't mind what they eat (and luckily most of their friend's parents have similar ideas to us so Ribena or a chocolate biscuit is probably all they wind up with). When they were smaller, no way could they have certain things.

Yeah to me that is unacceptable, but everyone has their own style I guess???

Linda/Luckmummy, Why is it that it's so strange for children to be snacking healthy these days? Bonnie(15 months) raises eyebrows and comments when we are out as she munches away on a carrot from the trolley..... strange
I'd love to see your little one munching on a capsicum... so cute hee hee

Anna loves stealing carrots from the fridge, but also likes to climb on top of the fridge and get the chocolate!
We are trying to explain to her the concept of a balance of healthy and nonhealthy foods at the moment. It's a battle. She often asks for chocolate for breakfast if we have it in the house. We are trying to keep less in the house, but Pat and I are sweet fans.
I think when people say everything in moderation they mean naughty foods are ok so long as you only eat a little and in general have a balanced diet. Pat and I like to eat home cooked meals, lots of veggie stir frys etc, so we don't worry about having full on desserts a few times a week (this week-homemade chocolate mousse, caramel pie and ice cream (would have been caramel meringue, but I couldn't be bothered doing the meringue) and frozen grapes (of course!))

Oh and we went out for dinner last night to Chinese and had dessert. Well, Pat had two! (Fried ice cream and banana fritter and ice cream).
