Magnesium in the form of loads of fresh greens has completely irradicated my period pain, since I changed my diet to include a lot more salad a raw food, especially greens. If you are not a rabbit and get sick of salads, try green juices mixed with fruit (use a little as poss, but enough to make it palatable) or a green smoothie - like spinahc, pineapple, banana and water all whizzed in the blender for about a minute. It looks.. well, green... but tastes yummy - even DH and the kids like it!

I know my SIL has also had success taking magnesium supplements

Yep - magnesium is great. Some women find Vit B6 helps, too. There are herbs you can take, too - but best to see a Naturopath.

Was also going to recommend magnesium suppliment at bedtime. Also, acupuncture/TCM can help immensely. My SIL has painful fibroids and at one stage was considering hysterectomy. She manages it with acupuncture and by doing tai chi. She says it has made an enormous difference - it gives her the power of positive thinking!

I used to get really bad period pain, I would get like a fever all through the night for 3 days wouldn't be able to move and apart from the cramping and nausia I would have pain all down my legs, arms and feet as well. It was really bad. I went to see a chinese doctor/herbalist who does pulse diagnosis (he basically feels your pulse and knows whats wrong with you, amazing the skill was past down through his family) who put me on a course of chinese herbs, the proper ones you have to boil in a special tea pot for an hour before you drink them twice a day.
They taste terrible but are amazing and well werth the pain of having to drink them. Ever since and that was probably 7 years ago my pain has been much milder i believe if I went on them again it would probably go away.
