Uti
Hi ladies,
Well i was wondering if anybody know of a natural way to help/prevent UTI's?
Nate was found to have issues with his kidneys during a scan while i was pregnant and he suffers from reflux of his urine.
he loves his cranberry juice which i find helpful but it doesnt seem to matter how clean i keep him he is picking up infections and i dont like him being on medication at such a young age. his first UTI he was only 2 weeks old.
Im waiting for his surgery but even with Private health care its still 6 months away.

Thanks again

Re: Uti
DD had UTI's a lot when she was little (hospital 3 times) and sometimes still gets them now. THey never did find out why she is just susseptable i guess. Some of the things i was told was only showers no baths hard when they are little i know but they soon learn. no sand as it can irritate no soap, hypoallergenic washing powder, low sugar diet. Cranberry is great so long as its the one with no added sugar DD also is now old enough to tell me when her wee stings and i get her straight onto some homeopathic Cantharis since i have been doing that she hasnt had to have antibiotics
Good luck they certinaly are horrible

Re: Uti
I use Grape Seed Extract and lots of raw garlic in our diets, instead of antibiotics.
Good luck with your little one

Re: Uti
Our 3yo has mild reflux on 1 side too. It is not too bad, so we have opted not to have surgery or go on prophylactic antibiotics. Paed is great - Frank Willis - head of Paeds at Freo hosp, plus has an office in Rockingham and one in Joondalup. He gets some things (scans etc.) done for us through Freo hosp to save us $. Can't speak highly enough of him.
We have given her antibiotics at times (you know, when she has had a fever for a while, can't sleep and is beside herself), but one does not work on her - can't remember which one. I didn't even know it worked like that, but it makes sense that different bodies synthesise foreign objects in different ways and hers made the antibiotic ineffective.
UTI's have dramatically decreased since she has been toilet trained.
It may just be me completely imagining it, but I feel she gets them when she is a bit low, so we do everything we can to make sure she eats really well (low sugar, low refined foods) and gets lots of sleep, as well as all to good stuff (cuddles, fun & generally a great life!). She tends to get a or something else when she has a UTI. She has cranberry juice first thing every morning mixed with veg juice (beetroot, carrot, celery, ginger and apple). I think this has made a big difference to the UTI's - that juice would be pretty alkaline I imagine.

Re: Uti
Do you have a number for him down there at one of his offices?
I dont care if i have to travel, im in Kal so the lack of specialist here is the biggest problem we face.
His reflux is quite major so its a bugger as it effects him quite alot, he loves the shower and has been having showers pretty much since he could sit and given half a chance would be in there for hours at a time.
Im very fussy with what the children eat and drink started it with the twins when they came along almost 5 years ago, nate only has cranberry juice, water or milk and i read lables of everything they eat try and go Organic GE free with everything.
Issy has quite bad skin irrations at times so use hypoallegic body wash, washing powder etc for all the children.
would be interested in getting a second opinion from a dr however as im not totally happy with his.
Cheers

Re: Uti
Make a tea/decoction with pearl barley and boiled water, or simply boil it up in a pot and let cool, then drink. It is quite delicious. Eat the cooked grain regularly too - perhaps strain it or blend it into his solid food? The pearl barley soothes the symptoms almost instantly, but it also is great prevention. Incorporate it into his daily diet. Poor munchkin. Let us know how he goes.

Re: Uti
I just dilute about 1/2 teaspoon GSE in 1/4 cup of water, for a child, 1-2 teaspoons for an adult, more water. You have to read the manufactures label, cause some companies make it stronger/weaker than others.

Re: Uti
You could also try calling Prof Reynolds at The Canberra Hospital. He did a study in 2004/2005 on the effectiveness of giving antibiotics to prevent UTIs in children with kidney reflux, as there is suspicion that it doesn't really do anything useful. You may have more luck speaking to the nurse that supports his research program as Prof's are always busy, but they may have found other things that are helpful in preventing infections.

Re: Uti
Wow, that's pretty cool. It's great when there are docs who actually question (and research) the use of antibiotics and western approaches.
Frank Willis - 08 9550 0300
He is a paed, but urology is one of his specialties within paediatrics. He is very sympathetic to parents who are not keen on antibiotics, and will explain all the options and implications without being condescending or judgemental. He also gave us his opinion about what he would do if Poppy was his child.
I'd be really grateful if you post back with any remedies that work.
All the best
