A work colleague who grew up in Nigeria told me he saw a pregnant woman casually picking off pieces of a mud daub hut and eating them, and his mum reacted like it's perfectly normal during pregnancy! I guess that woman must have been lacking some mineral to get cravings for eating mud

I get lots of morning sickness when pregnant, and eat lots of fruit to get through it. But once the morning sickness settles down, I just crave everything with sugar and fat in it! Luckily, my hubby gets the nesting urge around that stage of pregnancy - and his nesting is usually to bake lots of cakes

I do remember a horrid craving for roast lamb once in my first pregnancy. Wierd, because I'm vegetarian. But I happily gave in to my craving in the hope it would get rid of the morning sickness. It didn't, but it felt SOOOOO good to give in to that craving.

Do you mean in pregnancy or in general?

I do have weird non- pregnant cravings. Probably the weirdest is tinned peas, curry powder and mayonnaise mixed together. Oh yum, by itself, on toast (cold), in a toasted sandwich (made out of dough ones best).

At to some possible reasons why...I *do* know that there is very little hard, proven evidence in regards to why.

Some believe it's the body signaling to Mum to provide it with food that meets some current need (so the mud for whatever nutritional need that provides!)

Others have said it's some evolutionary mechanism at work, providing mums with plenty of calories for pregnancy.

And another theory - it's the result of the release of hormones that are similar to those that are released in a woman's natural cycle.

All I know is that I crave carbs in the early stages of pregnancy as a way to help my morning sickness. I like to think that it's my body talking to my brain

Protein all through this one. First it was meat, eggs etc. These last few weeks it's been milk and sugary stuff (sugar cravings are body's way of asking for more protein apparently.)

Some fish during pregnancy is actually good, but avoid swordfish & others known to be high in mercury. Raw stuff like oysters are probably best avoided, and some say to avaoid shellfish as contamination is common (but I ate my beloved prawns when preg ) but most flesh fish is fine.

When preg with DD i just wanted Orange Juice I drank truckloads of the stuff (and suffered majorly with heartburn ) then it was strawberry milk and chicken schnitzel with DS it was macca's cheeseburgers that was pretty much all I wanted I also craved vegemite throughout both pregnancies - I assumed it was the vit B I was after.
