You are probably aware that Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett has allowed Gunns twenty years of access to our irreplaceable native forests to feed its pulp mill. And as the New Year began, Environment Minister Peter Garrett gave the polluting pulp mill construction approval despite more scientific work needing to be done. He gave a two-year extension to Gunns when they were unable to deliver the accurate and completed scientific information on time for assessment. John Gay, CEO of Gunns, is hell-bent building the forest-hungry pulp mill. After Peter Garrett's announcement he said that Gunns "are now clear to begin construction on the mill, pending financial close". That means as soon as Gunns gets the $2.2 billion they will begin building the pulp mill! This is a tragic start to the year for Tasmania's irreplaceable environment, our climate and our clean, clever future. However, Super Activists can take action to make sure that their retirement savings and superannuation are not being used for environmentally or socially destructive practices; such as destroying Australia's irreplaceable forests or funding Gunns' destructive pulp mill in Tasmania. The biggest hurdle now facing Gunns' pulp mill is getting the finance. Super Activists are making sure the financial community is aware of the risks associated with investing in Gunns' pulp mill. It's crystal clear that you don't want your money being used to fund it. Responsible investing is profitable. Super Activists like you help to protect the environment by making sure your money goes to sustainable investments. With state and federal governments seemingly subservient to Gunns, your continued engagement is needed now more than ever. Super Activist

No worries! Super funds are Huge institutional investors that make a really big difference in these kinds of projects. If a large number of people write or ring into their super managers, they will listen. Super funds are into ethical and environmental investments too these days they are responsible to their members for more than just profits. I would suggest that everyone roll their super into an ethical investment company in protest! But that's just me, I guess!

A really good ethical super fund is Australian Ethical Investments I have invested in the Top Companies Share Investment Fund with Australian Ethical for about 8 or so years now - they are fantastic. During the boom they made 16% a year, and last year with the crash in the share market they still made 3% on their conservative portfolio (which is really good - many super funds were in deficit last year!) I strongly advise that everyone choose an ethical share fund for their investments - there's no reason not to - Australian Ethical proves that you can make money by investing in ethical, globally responsible companies. I agree Mocha Mumma, everyone should have an ethical share fund! Why invest in blood diamonds and the Iraq war - when solar panels and sustainable farming make you more money and give you that warm and fuzzy feeling
