I hate to bring this up, but the energy saving lightbulbs contain Mercury, the mercury is more harmful to the enviroment than the carbon they are saving.

Is it really worth it?

I heard that the mercury level is soooo low that it really doesnt effect anything. I think the energy saving would be very much worth it.

It is a small amount of mercury but even that small amount if not disposed of properly is still more harmful than the carbon emissions it saves. There is a government in europe that is actually reimbursing households to replace the energy saving bulbs it originally promoted to its citizens. The better choice would be LED lights which have 0 harmful chemicals, use even less energy, give a more natural light and are dimmable. Personally I would rather not have heavy metals encased in a fragile glass bulb anywhere in my home.

So many things are about choosing the lesser of two evils aren't they?

I remember seeing the light bulb test on Mythbusters and the led lights were so much more energy efficient.
