Hi All, Has anyone started an edible garden at their school or pre-school? I am looking for some tips and success stories! I was thinking of starting with a few herbs in pots - really fragrant ones like lemon balm and mint - and also a passionfruit vine.....any other ideas? I think if I start small - just a couple of pots, that water restrictions won't be an issue. We are in the Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne. Thanks!

rosemary is a nice one. J used to come home from kindy smelling of rosemary cos he liked playing around the rosemary bush there.

not a great time of year to start! but anyway... Our entire vegie garden is in half wine barrels, so it can be done! Spinach & lettuce (kids can see the results of their work reasonably quickly). We do have some broadbeans in, which the kids could pick straight from the vine & eat.

B's Kindy just planted a vegetable and herb garden. More for the fun than anything else. It's about 1.5mx2.5m, way too small for the plants but as I said- more for the fun They planted some herbs, pumpkin, zucchini, beans, tomatoes and some lettuce. All the kids and some parents enjoyed the activity, and the children enjoy checking the progress of the plants and watering.

I'd recommend vegies with a quick growing cycle that children can pluck and eat so there is some instant gratification. Things like snow peas, carrots (picked at the baby stage), cherry tomatoes, flowers and nice smelling herbs which have already been suggested. Passionfruit vines require a LOT of space for very little fruit and, to my way of thinking, my not be very enticing to eat because of all the seeds. If peanut allergies were not such an issue I'd also recommend growing those. They put nitrogen back into the soil and many kids might be surprised to learn where peanut butter comes from. |
