Default New Car?

Well not a new new car, a used one. We're trying to figure out if we should get another car. We have a Corrolla Seca Ascent and it's starting to feel a wee bit on the small side with both girls getting bigger. It's mostly fine with just them and me but if we go anywhere with DH too, it's very squeezy. Dh being just over 6foot and me just under, we can't even sit very comfortably. We went to the corrolla from a falcon because of fuel concerns but now I'm thinking I would like a slightly larger car...BUT all this talk about the cost of fuel is stressing me, how big can we go before it starts costing too much in fuel. I don't want to be one of the ranks of the fuel guzzlers either.

I like the look and convenience of a mid size SUV, 2001-2002- currently looking at Ford Escape, or a Honda CRV, or Nissan x trail, but have no experience on how much more expensive they are to run than say a camry. If we could afford a new car I'd love to go for the new Hybrid Ford Escape, but I can only dream!

So give me some opinions, what do you drive, anybody with any of the above models, what are your thoughts?

Em

I love my CR-V! I think I worked it out to be either 9 or 11l/100kms. Depending on petrol prices, a full tank costs me between $60-$70. You can probably pick one up for around $13-15k. Hondas have a much better reputation than Ford, too. I drove an X-trail for a few days as a hire car & didn't think much of it. Didn't feel as sturdy as the CR-V & the speedo was in the cetre of the dash instead of in front of the steering wheel, which I found harder to see & had to take my eyes off the road for longer to see things.

we've had our crv since '99 - upgraded from a corolla - love it, get 440-500 km/tank (it's a manual, think auto take a wee bit more) Fits 5 plus camping stuff. Can't get extra seats in the back, and the middle seat isn't that safe IMO - the back seat splits down the middle. We only really use it for trips on 60 and lower roads.

It's getting a bit old now, and starting to need money spent on it, and I'm thinking of downgrading to a honda jazz - haven't looked into it in detail though (dh now has work ute we can use for camping, so can go a smaller car).
