Default Whaling

Surely, by now, it is obvious to everyone that appealing to the Japanese sense of ecology is not going to save whales.

Perhaps we could appeal to their wallets.

What would happen if everyone who thought it would be a good idea to have whales around for a little longer just stopped buying Toyota products... as an example?

What would happen if this idea (if it has not already happened) were to be disseminated via e-mail to everyone with a computer?

I don't know.

Just a thought.

Kind of like the boycott on Nestle products? I think any sort of pressure is useful in this case.

It would depend how far and wide you could spread your message and how you could appeal to people's sense of compassion and justice. I wonder how successful this would be with whales as it does not directly impact on people's lives. They may be less motivated. I know this type of campaigne was tried when petrol prices soared. Now that is an issue that impacts on everyone.

Problem I see is cars are a longer term purchase compared to, say, coffee or Nestle products - so there are a lot of Toyotas needing spare parts. And with such a big purchase, persuading people to add whales to their priorities along with price and safety... I think it'll be a tough battle.

But think we do need to do some lateral thinking like this to figure out how to deal with problem

I think that applying economic pressure is probably the way to go, however, I believe as individuals we are probably best served by pressuring our governments to apply economic sanctions to Japan.

Yay!! Lets wait and see though, fingers crossed...

I think greenpeace do a great job, but I am always surprised when I ask them when they are trying to get members if they themselves are vegetarian/vegan and they answer no....I don't understand how one can be all for saving the life of one species and happily take anothers for dinner....
