Default About Organic Drinks and Pet Food!

I am finding myself much more comfortable after switching to an organic diet but I would like to get to know of some good organic drinks and their recipes so that I have a choice of some liquid supplement. I have a few pets at home and am seriously thinking about them too to switch them over to organic food. Thanks for your ideas!

Hi Dyna

What about filtered water, or you can buy organic water. There are smoothies and juices (even green smoothies but I've never been brave enough to go there) you can make at home yourself using just about every fruit, veggie and herb you can think of! There are some organic wines available to buy now (look on google), some health food supermarkets sell organic softdrinks and most conventional supermarkets have an organic juice or two, usually long life.

I don't know too much about organic prepackaged pet food, I'm sure it would be available somewhere. I'd be inclined to make my own food using (organic) grains and veggies (dogs are originally scavengers and would have eaten a lot more 'green' stuff than they are now) and add the occasional organic raw egg (without the shell egg is great for animals coats) and some raw free range meat like wild rabbit or kangaroo.

Buying organic water is ... well ... not sustainable. It takes as much water to manufacture the packaging as the packaging contains. There is nothing nutritionally wrong with filtered tap water, and it is better for the environment too.

As Meredith suggested, you can prepare your own stewed pet food in the same way that you would cook for yourself. Your local butcher will likely know where you can source tough cuts, roo meat and other products as Meredith suggested. Pet food can be frozen in portions just as you would for your own meals. Dogs are usually quite happy and healthy on left overs so long as your own diet is fairly low fat. There is really no need to prepare special pet food unless you have a lot of animals to feed. Yep, the raw egg or left over porridge goes to our dogs too - all organic.

More important than switching to organic, is switching to slow-prepared, home-cooked, unpackaged foods. Our environment cannot cope with more manufactured waste! Try not to think of it in terms of sourcing products. The benefits are artificial and only serve to line some entrepreneur's pockets and devastate our (or someone else's) local environment.

There is a fabulous raw foods thread here on NP with recipes for all sorts of health drinks and salads and treats. Will see if I can find it and bump it for you.

If you want organic drinks, buy a live juicer.

Here Here Jodie. Spot on. We all need to spend more time (imhoi) getting back to basics and making more things from scratch, and avoiding those easy meals that come in lots of plastic and 'stuff' that needs to be tossed out.

I do think that 'going organic' is important too though. Our organic delivery is a huge part of our week and family life (we love the family who deliver for us, and the children enjoy meeting them with our boxes). We are committed to not purchasing fruit and veggies that have been sprayed, or being grown in soil that is pretty nasty.
Goal for 2008. spend a good bit of time getting the veggie patch going, so that I can teach the children more about f & V hands on. they see it at the organic farm when we go there - but i'd love to send them out to the garden to get carrots for example, that we have grown. we wont have organic certification, but where we are, without agriculture close, should be fine. will get the soil tested though, just to see. curious i guess!

If you eating organically, I cant see why it wouldnt be ok to simply drink good filtered water (great investment a filter!!) and have some juice you prepare yourself sometimes (or as a treat buy a bottle of organic juice for the fridge.) we do that - and sometimes all have a treat of that with water, using as a cordial....... Apart from that treat from time to time, my guys are happy on water or fresh goats milk, because they dont know any different........

More in fact. For every 1 litre of bottled water, it uses 5 litres to produce.
