sunscreen alternatives?

Hi there

I was laying on the beach this morning, (living the good life!) and wondering if anybody knows of any herbal/natural alternatives to sunscreen?

We use a zinc based sunscreen called UV Natural - in most health food shops. But we only really use it when in the sun in the middle of the day - use hats, shade options, trees etc where possible, and happy to have early and late day sun.

We are loving the new Miessence sunscreen, but like Jakaluma try to manage with healthy exposure to sunshine, outside of the hottest part of the day. We only resort to sunscreen when we are in the sun during those hottest hours.

I would love to hear of any sunscreen that does not contain nut oils. This is an issue at my son's preschool as we have a student with a serious nut allergy. UV Natural has nut oil in it and we have been told not to use it. As yet, I have not found another natural brand of sunscreen that meets this criteria. Any suggestions? What about recipes for making your own?

Maybe something to do with zinc? Mixing it in with something else, so not just straight zinc? Not sure how you'd tell how effective it is though.

Could be worth a call to UV Natural, because this has come up before, and nut allergies are becoming more common.

Susan, a friend of mine whose child is anaphalatic (sp) to sesame seeds (hence probably nuts too) did a patch test of the Miessence on her boy with no adverse reaction. It is nut free, and I bought it from Joyce.

We're using Avado this year. Got it from the health food shop & it's much better value for money than some of the others (but has nut oils if that's an issue)

I was going to get the Miessence one, but I think the Avado tube will last all summer.

Here's the ingredients for Miessence:

We have UV Natural (for babies) and Soleo organic. Just be careful with the UV Natural, as a couple of times recently it's got on DD's clothes (trying to put sunscreen on a reluctant toddler is always fun isn't it?), and doesn't seem to come out in the wash....I normally wash in cold water, but have rewashed these clothes in warm, and still the sunscreen is there.....any tips from anyone as to getting it off? I now try to put it on before I put her clothes on, but makes it tricky if you need to put more on later.... I haven't noticed the same problem with the Soleo.
