Default healthy ice cream

Hey!

Summer is here soon and my kids ALWAYS (I mean ALWAYS) want ice cream. I must admit that I am overwhlemed about all these packaging saying "97% fat free " ice cream. to be honest I dont really trust them.

I just wanted to know which healthier tubs of ice cream do you guys prefer to save me from freezing my hands reading all the info on the pack.

Depends what you are looking for, fat free usually means waaaay more sugar for taste, I look for less additives/chemicals...there is one brand that is Natural- is it Brownes? I'll go check soon.

But there is this..

Easy peasy home made icecream

Works a treat and you can customise it how ever you want.

Some icecream labelled 'natural' or 'original' has yellow colouring - E110 & E104. These colours are now banned in the UK and must carry a warning label in the EU.

We are lucky to have cold press juicer which turns frozen fruit and coconut/soy milk icecubes into icecream. It took me a few years before I decided to buy one as they are pretty pricey, but I am very glad I did - it's unreal.

We will only buy Haagen Daas so I haven't bought ice cream since we moved back to Australia. I am disgusted at the ice creams sold in supermarkets here! Someone told me HD is available somewhere about 45 minutes away but I haven't been there to check. We have made ice cream about 3 times this year and it's GORGEOUS but there is no way I am making that for daily consumption! I do it all organically and it ends up costing over $20 a litre; worth it for special occasions but too expensive and high in fat to eat every day. We'll substitute with fruit and yoghurt icypoles between times of indulgence I think.

I never ever ever go low fat - the crap they put in to make it taste okay and have a good text with less fat is a lot worse than a bit of fat.

I'm a fan of Doramum's easy home made icecream - so easy and quick.

We also freeze bananas then blend with a mixture from the following list: cocoa, honey, cream, yoghurt, nuts, chocolate, milk, vanilla essence, whatever else we have that might be nice in it. You need a really good strong blender, but it makes such smooth delicious icecream (even just the straight banana).

Homer Hudson icecream is pretty good and more natural than a lot of them. We seldom have ice cream but a while ago I got some run of the mill 'light' ones (blue ribbon?) on special, and I was appalled, it was horrible. I think stuff like that is actually called 'iced confectionary' because it's not real ice cream. Yeech.

We just made some ice cream using cream, condensed milk and vanilla. Kids licked the beaters and gave the thumbs up. Thanks Dora's mum.

Glad you like it. Even my Mum who is australia's most suspicious consumer and the whole food cop from hell is okay with that recipe. She makes it for my Dad.

Should have seen the daggers I got from her when I gave him 2 tiny bars of organic chocolate for fathers day, she thinks chocolate/sugar/cocoa shortens your life span or something. He has to hide things or she throws it away..

Sara Lee French Vanilla is the only failsafe ice cream I am aware of (which means it is the only one that is completely natural) but that may not include the imported ones such as HD or HH

Wow thanks for the reply. It looks like the brands Homer Hudson and Haagen Daas are more recommended than others, but I am not sure whether I have seen them or not.

A friend of mine recommended me to bry frozen yoghurt instead like Bulla instead of ice cream...do you guys think that frozen yoghurt is healthier than the normal ice cream at all??

possibly depends on what else you eat? i'm imagine the fat and sugar content to be pretty similar. for us, the good or bad is in the extras - colours, fat substitute etc
