Additive/Sugar/Wheat-free Birthday Cake & Party Food ideas for 1st Birthday
Hi everyone - I am sure that the reliable NP community will be able to help me with this one. I have taken such a stand on the food that I have not given to Lennon yet (much to the amusement of some of my friends and family) so I'll be damned if I ruin all my good parenting by serving up unhealthy food with additives/preservatives/sugar in it for Lennon's 1st birthday party. I have had a look at some of your other threads and ideas in the past but just thought I would throw it out there again. I have got a few ideas for snacks to serve at the party - and some ideas too for the cake (don;t want to do do sugary icing and lollies on top) and we are all wheat-free as well. Please tell me what you have all done in the past for your parties!
My ideas so far: make little patty cakes out of rice flour (that is fine, we use rice flour anyway) and for icing, i was going to puree blueberries, and then add that to plain Mundella yoghurt which is quite thick to make it kind of blue/purple. Then I was going to decorate the cakes with the blue yoghurt "icing" and pop little bits of fruit on top for colour instead of lollies. What do you think?
Thanking you all in advance for your ideas and suggestions.

I'm not a fan of blue food generally but it's a birthday party so do whatever you wish!
I never iced my babies' first birthday cakes. Just served it straight up with whipped cream and fruit for the adults. Banana bread, carrot cake and zucchini cake have been our choices. They did all contain a small amount of sugar but could easily all have been made with gluten-free flour and pear juice or maple syrup to sweeten. I have also done pavlova with very little sugar - but it really does need sugar to make the merenge (sp?) stiff enough to form a shell. Just sharing some ideas.Jodie

Kristy, i didn't do icing either for the first birthday. and i didn't use honey like the recipes say, i used pear concentrate. Here are the recipes -
Banana Quinoa Muffins
1/2 c Brown rice flour
1/2 c Quinoa flakes
1 tb Honey
1 ts Baking powder 1/2 ts Baking soda
1/2 ts Salt
1 Ripe banana
1 ea Egg
Preheat oven to 200° C. Mix flour and flakes with dry ingredients. In separate bowl mix together banana, egg and honey , add to dry ingredients. Pour into greased muffin tins. Bake 20 - 25 minutes.
Carrot Cake
-----------
This is a moist and delicious carrot cake with a hint of orange. Very much
like a 'real cake'.
6 eggs, separated
1/2 cup honey (or less)
1 1/2 cups carrots, cooked and pureed
1 Tlbs grated orange rind
1 Tlbs orange juice
3 cups almond flour
Preheat over to 160° C.
Beat the egg yolks and honey together. Mix in carrot puree, orange rind, orange juice and almond flour. Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold in.
Spoon into a greased springform pan. Bake for about 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.Gill - mum to fin and harmony,
