Default Cloth Nappy Lingo

I hope I'm not treading on toes here but seeing as how there seems to be so many newbies interested in Cloth Nappies, I thought I'd put a list up of the cloth nappy lingo. I know I found it intimidating hearing all this jargon.

So here's my contribution:

Types of Cloth Nappies

Terry Flats - flat square piece of cloth, usually made of terry cloth, though can also be bought in muslin or flannelette.

Prefolds - flat rectangular piece of cloth with an absorbent panel sewn down the middle. Very similar to Terry Flats, with the added advantage of having extra absorbency in the middle.

Fitted Nappy - A nappy that is shaped to fit like a pair of underpants once fastened (ie similar in shape to a disposable). Fitted nappies have elastic around the waist and legs to ensure no leaks. Fitted nappies can be made out of terry cloth, flannelette, or hemp.

All-in-Ones (AIOs) - Very similar to a fitted nappy but already have a waterproof (and usually breathable) outer cover and a liner built in. Note that terry flats, prefolds and fitted nappies will need a separate cover and liner.

Pocket Nappy - fleece inner and fleece or PUL outer, sewn so there's a pocket in the middle you can stuff with absorbent materials. brilliant for nights. similar to a fitted nappy in all other ways.

Covers

Covers - The outermost layer of a cloth nappy. Also called "Pilchers" or "Wraps". Good covers can be made out of wool, fleece or PUL. (Bad covers are made out of PVC.)

PUL - Polyurethane Laminate. Substance used to line covers to make them waterproof. Certain PULs also ensure that the cover is still breathable.

PVC -
Polyvinyl Chloride and is a common plastic used for insulating and jacketing many wire and cable products. For some reason, someone thought this would be a good substance to line covers.

Other Nappy Things

Booster -
An extra piece of cloth (terry, flannel, cotton, microfibre or hemp) inserted into the nappy to increase absorbency. Sometimes called "Soakers" or "Doublers".

Liner - the innermost layer of a cloth nappy. Usually made from microfleece or paper, it reduces the moisture next to baby's skin and also catches poo, making disposal easy.

Little Squirt - high pressure spray gun that you attach to your toilet, and it allows you simply to hold the nappy in the bowl and spray the poo off.

Snappi - plastic fastening to hold nappies together. Here's a pic:

Dry-pailing - More efficient alternative to soaking. With today's washing machine, detergents and the materials used for modern cloth nappies, there's no longer any need to soak. After disposing of any solid wastes, you store the nappies in a lidded bucket or bin until washing.

....well, that's all I can think of atm. If you can think of any more terms used in the cloth nappy world, then please put them here!

Awww thanks Helen! Actually, that's my "I've been awake for over 24 hours and the whole world has gone loopy" smile. I was surprised how "normal" I looked!

Fay - oh I know what you mean! Then there's the "what the best nappy system?" (ooh, that sounds like a new thread!) Ok - off to do another one!

Eilleen

Thanks. This is great and really useful - I think someone needs to do a list for newcomer (such as myself) for general lingo ie: BF, MW, CC, DD, DS, DH...you know what I mean.........?

What do you all think??

Hi KT!

There's a sticky thread already on other acronyms under Getting Acquainted. Here's the link: http://www.forums.naturalparenting.c...ement.php?f=38
