Default Staph injection for labouring woman

Hi everyone. I am so excited my dear friend just gave birth to a gorgeous girl this am. Whilst in hospital she had to be put onto a drip for 6 hrs for staph for the baby what the???????????? Can't believe all the tripe that goes on in hospitals. Does anyone know about this ?

Apparently m/w thought she was fully dilated and got her to "push" for a 1/2 hr with no results, as in baby out. So broke her waters to bring things on -great. Then next m/w comes in. Oh they have made a mistake she wasn't fully dilated only 5cm???????? So she goes back to intense contractions. Had to share. Hospitals, in my opinion are not great places to have a baby. They just don't seem to know. I know you have all this kind of thing before but there we go. Well little girl and Mum are doing well. Lots of love and hugs to you both.

Wendy

It is possible that she was fully dilated but that the baby moved away from her cervix in some way. When the baby moves to a less optimal position sometimes a cervix will close up again - happened to me! A much better guide of readiness to push is that a woman wants to not that some magical point in dilation has been reached but hospy policies (or conventions) usually say that women HAVE to have a VE before they're *ahem* "allowed" to push.

Are you sure it was staph and not GBS? Hospy policies usually involve drips of antibiotics as a "just in case" thing for that. Obviously they've never heard of antibiotic resistant bugs LOL.

Hi Janet it was in a drip administered for 6 hrs- yuck. Luckily she didn't have to be pinned down for that time. I don't know what GBS is ??????????????? Dagh I feel dumb sometimes with all this internet terminlogy.

Love

Wendy, I think Janet is referring to Group B Strep

Re: breaking membranes, in addition to Janet's explanation, sometimes it's the bag of bulging waters that pushes the cervix open but once membranes are ruptured, if bub's head is still high, then the lack of pressure on the cervix results in it closing back up a few centimetres or more. It appears to be a set back in labour but perhaps the mum would have taken just as long to birth (or longer) if the membranes had been left intact. It's hard to know these things for sure just from a description alone.

The 6 hrs on a drip has me totally confuzzled. Why would they do that? Did they definitely say it was for staph infection. Even with Group B Strep, isn't the drip containing antiB's only administered in the hour prior to birth?

The antiBs can be administered all through labour and for another 24 hours in some hospitals.

Yep, group B strep. If you test postitive in late pregnancy this is standard procedure as the bacteria can be dangerous to the baby.

GBS is present in about 30% of the population at any given time without ill effects. AntiBs at this time are a poorly evidenced and traumatising way to start life together for mothers and babies. There are lots of other options which are very effective and don't have side effects like causing thrush which will endanger the breastfeeding relationship.

I am not too sure if it was Strep or staph but will find out this week when I see her out of hospital. Went for a quick visit last night but didn't have time to chat. Oh I hate hospitals for birth it all seems so very unatural.

Stay tuned
