It might depend where you are to some degree, but really there are no protocols. You'll hit brick walls of ignorance wherever you go. After my HOME lotus birth which required transfer post-partum for sutures the Qld southern zone management committee tried to ban lotus birth in their hospitals It didn't work. They were arguing infection risk which anyone who knows anything about lotus birth knows is nonsense. And that proved that point didn't it?! I actually found the midwives were fine, and they quickly dubbed the placenta bag "her handbag" in an affectionate way, but the Drs were pains in the bum. I had a few encounters... the paediatrician had a trainee in tow so they both got an ear-bashing from me, then there was the poor youing fella charged with lecturing me about contraception - he got an edumacation too. Bascially, if they were medical then they saw fit to question. Thankfully (?) none of the docs had ever heard of it so they were too dumb-struck to give much back to me but others might not be so lucky.

I have a friend who had a lotus caesarean at Selangor private on the Sunshine Coast. Dr Sarah Buckley believes it may have been the first in Qld. So there must be cooperative obs out there but Selangor breaks all the rules and repoutations so it is probably a one-off.

the cord cutting is usually dad doman, so this is an easy one to intervene with...you can just say no...unlike other hospital protocols which can be done without your notice

good luck with it all

Hi I have heard that many women actually travel long distances, even in the throngs of labour to attend the private hospital at Nambour so they can have a lotus birth, vbac, any kind of natural birth that the medical world is usually opposed to. I know a woman who had a lotus birth there and she described as being amazing - actually she had to have a caesarian but was still able to enjoy a lotus "birth"!

I'll be interested to see how you go with getting a lotus birth in hospital. I am a student mw and recently brought up the topic of lotus birth with a group of hospital mws. TBH I expected shocked and disapproving reactions; to my surprise they spoke of the practice very respectfully! This was in a public hospital with very high intervention rates, so I was not expecting the mws to be so receptive to the idea. None of the mws I spoke to had ever had a woman request it but all were knowledgeable about it and thought it had some real positives such as a gentler transitiion for the baby and preventing the "pass the parcel" expectation from visitors.

I hope you come across positive and respectiful attitudes if you choose to lotus birth in hospital.
