I get really concerned when I see women hiring careproviders of any stripe without actually knowing their rates of intervention, particularly VBAC and c-sec. We REALLY need to have this information because that Inner Good Girl who doesn't want to rock the boat by asking embarrassing questions, is actually not serving us well. What serves us well in birth is to know for sure what we've hired so we can decide whether or not it's right for us. No point going to a hospy with a 20% VBAC rate coz you've got to be really lucky to sneak a baby out there, obviously. No point choosing a hospy with a 80% primary c-sec rate coz who wants surgery they don't actually need? (And yes, there are private hospies in Australia like that, trust me!) I know it's scary being all assertive about this stuff so if it helps, think of it as for your baby's sake even if you can't do it for yourself. A careprovider who does frequent inductions, drugs, forceps and caesareans is going to be bad for your baby because those things injure babies. Gentle parenting doesn't start when you get your baby back from the SCN after your unnecessary induction. So do you know their rates? How are you marrying your desires to those of your careprovider? Are you trying to achieve a normal physiological birth in a hospital where only 5% of women do? 5% is the average of women who give birth in this country without intervention each year. Scary, huh? Are you really prepared to lose your spot if you don't gestate or labour to their timetable? How are you managing this possibility? |

I guess entonox counts as an intervention? |

If it's important to you to have it or avoid it, you need to know what your CP does with it, don't you? |

I know in NSW or at least greater Sydney, intervention rates are listed somewhere (not sure where but I have seen them before) for private and public hospitals. You are right though Jodie, every practitioner is lumped together, I don't know of anywhere that specifically has individual dr's intervention rates. If you were to ask these dr's would they actually know the answer, or have true and correct data on it....and would they be willing to share it????

How up to date is their information Nicole? A lot of the info you get through Freedom of Information is years old - so not likely to represent the true rate as it is now. In three years I believe the section rate at RBWH has increase significantly!! |

I have seen two lots of stats in the last 6 months or so, one for each subsequent year, either 2003 and 2004 or 2004 and 2005.

Hospital annual reports list a lot of the necessary info, you could just ASK and keep asking till someone tells you, and the perinatal data provides it. If you want to know, you can find it. And we should all really want to know to truly know what we're getting into. The Brissie FBC, for example, has some of it's info online and RWH in Melbourne has YTD stats online. Sometimes it's just a matter of looking : ) Often Maternity Coalition will know too or at least have a way of finding out. Individual Obs in the hospy may differ but an overal figure still gives you a good idea of what they deem acceptable. As for private practitioners, no one should hire one if they're not prepared to part with that information. As a consumer you deserve to know it. Even house painters come with testimonials and clients to talk to : ) Last edited by JCF; 25-02-2006 at 03:04 PM.. |

And just out of interest, Warragul hospital has the highest VBAC rate in Victoria, followed by Monash Clayton. I don't know what they are but it wouldn't be hard to find out as they both push themselves because of it. : ) And Box Hill Private has an 80% c-sec rate for first time mothers... Perhaps best avoided... |

80% c-sect rate for first time mothers????!!!!!!! That's just awful!!!! Apparently, I should have a c-sect next time due to having 2-3rd deg tears with each baby.....so 2 HP's have told me......
